about

Bardo premiered at Shaking the Tree Theatre on February 27, 2020, and concluded its initial run on March 7.

Bardo is a staged dance piece choreographed and performed by artist Lyra Butler-Denman. The original score was arranged and produced by Ahmond.

Bardo arrives at its title via the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. In that tradition, bardo is a transition and is commonly used to describe the intermediate state between death and rebirth. This work incorporates 'bardo' as a guiding principle, paying deep respect and gratitude to the culture from which it originates. This work would not exist without it.

Bardo's narrative explores grief related to death and offers a ritual for gaining new insights into this experience.

Early in the project, a decision was made to tune all arrangements to 432 Hz, in contrast to the current standard of 440 Hz. This choice aligns with the frequency used by Tibetan monks for their singing bowls. Each musical piece on the soundtrack is followed by a singing bowl ritual playing the notes of the seven chakras to herald the opening of a new awareness and understanding.

As we move through the transitions from the root to the crown, the music takes the listener on a journey that is both beatific and terrifying.

This score invites the listener to discover themselves in the ritual, and to create a personal ritual for their own transitions as they move forward in life...and in death.
